Replace a Zipper With Different Fastenings

Now here comes the fun part, you will need to determine what type of zipper you have and what sort of general fastening it has. The types are easy to understand and are basically metal or nylon, closed or open (two-way fastening) and they could be either chunky or fine. The types of fastening are described separately below.

How To Replace A Zipper With A Centered Fastening

This type of zipper is quite common and is usually used for dresses, skirts and trousers/pants. What is likely to put people off when coming to replace a zipper on this type of garment is twofold:

• There is usually a waistband with its own fastening to unpick and line-up
• There is not a lot of ‘wriggle room’ at the bottom end of the zipper especially if we are talking about trousers or pants.

This standard zip fastening is placed  in the seam with an equal width of seam allowance on each side and is probably the easiest type to replace.

1. Firstly, align the zip so the zip is centered from the right side making sure the zipper remains closed.
2. Mark and press the seams in their closed position.
3. Tack the seams together and press open.
4. Align the zipper down the middle of the seam and pin it in place on the wrong side of the fabric.
5. Sew the zipper in place using a zipper foot – when you sew across the bottom of the zipper, take extra care not to jar your sewing machine needle on the teeth of the zipper.
6. Remove the tacking stitches and press again lightly. To finish off, re-sew the waistband in place (if appropriate) and tidy up the bottom of the zipper with a small piece of lining fabric.

Replacing a Lapped Zipper

Again, this type of fastening has the same problems as the centered zipped but has the additional issue of getting the overlap to line up without either missing the fabric altogether or sewing it too tight to allow the zipper past. However, this type of zipper is to some extent a little easier than the centered if you pay good attention to detail.

The Invisible Zipper

These zippers are really delicate and have spiral nylon teeth. They are mostly used on dresses, skirts and side openings for trousers/pants.

Open-Ended Zippers

Used on jackets and anoraks and often have a two-way opening with two pull ta

gs.

One of the hardest garments to eplace a zipper on is anything that has a lining.

Why Sewing For Beginners is Needed

When we were growing up most of our mothers and grandmothers knew how to sew. As clothing has become cheaper and cheaper, sewing has become almost a lost art amongst the younger generations. Thankfully, the past few years has seen resurgence in sewing and other handcrafts which has led to a new availability of information on how to sew and supplies to learn to sew with.

Sewing requires a unique set of skills but these skills are not complicated to learn, although there is a definite learning curve in learning to sew. If you jump in with both feet without a few basics you are surely setting yourself up to fail. The best way to develop your sewing skills is to start slow, learn, and work your way up to more complex projects as time goes on and you learn what you are doing.

Sewing For Beginners – Tip 1

The first step in starting to sew is to gather up all of the items you need to complete your project. Get out your sewing machine booklet and thread your machine. Make sure, before you ever even attempt a project, that your machine is threaded correctly and working well. This will save you a ton of frustration.

Tip 2

If you will be sewing something from a pattern, take the time to read through all of the instructions and make sure that you clearly understand them. Make sure to read and understand everything before you start to cut out your fabric. Remember that once you cut your fabric it will be in pieces and you can’t just re-cut it.

Tip 3

Before you work with your fabric, make sure you wash and dry it. This will ensure that your finished project will not shrink when you first wash it. Once it dries you will want to iron it out. Once your fabric is washed, dried, and ironed, then you can pin your pieces to the fabric and cut them out. Cut all of your pieces out using the sharpest pair of scissors you can find. Using sharp scissors cuts down on frustration and keeps your fabric looking good at the edges.

Tip 4

When you first start sewing you will want to baste your pattern pieces together with long hand stitches. This allows you to see how your project will look once you have sewn it together on your machine. And, it allows you to make adjustments much more easily if you should happen to need to. One good tip here is to use a bright colored thread for basting. This will allow you to easily remove it once your project is sewn together.

Tip 5

The most important thing for you to remember when you first start sewing is that Rome was not built in a day.î Start with a very simple project and take your time. Then start a more complex project and take some time to learn a new skill or two when completing it. As you progress through your various projects you will feel more and more confident in your sewing abilities. After all, you are learning to sew because it is functional and fun and soon you will be ahead of sewing for beginners and branching out to more complex sewing!

It is always fun to learn a new skill or craft. In the case of  learning to sew, it can be both a household skill and a fun craft at the same time. The term ìsewingî can encompass anything from simple repairs to full-blown projects such as clothing and household textiles. Whether you have ever sewed before, of if you are ìcraftyî are not an issue if you can thread a needle. If you can thread the needle then you can learn to sew; it really isnít hard to do with some basic instruction and practice.

Whenever you are starting out to learn something new, it is always a challenge. There is so much information online and in books that it can feel a bit overwhelming at times. However, if you take the time to start with the very basic information and build your knowledge from there, then your skills will surely follow.

Learning to sew- Formal or Informal lessons

Learning to sew is really one of those hands on type of things. You can easily learn to sew but you have to take the time to try it out and see what works for you. TThere are often online tips for learning to sew but the easiest thing you can do is sign up for a sewing lesson at your local craft, sewing machine or quilting store. Generally any store which sells the more expensive sewing machines will offer lessons for free or at a very reasonable cost. You do not have to buy their sewing machine simply to take a class and try out sewing for yourself.

Another more formal lesson environment can be your local adult school or community college. Many of these learning institutions offer low cost crafting and sewing classes to members of the local community. This can be a great option for learning a new skill and meeting people with a similar interest at the same time.

If you have a friend or relative who knows how to sew, ask them to show you how. Find an easy project to start on and ask them if they will give you a hand at completing it and show you what you need to know. Most people are more than happy to spend time teaching people what they know.

If no one in your area offers lessons, and you donít happen to know anyone who sews, you can always find tutorials and lessons online. Simply go to any search engine and type in the words ìsewing lessonsî and you will have thousands of options to choose from!

Learning to sew - the Lingo

Sewing, just like many other crafts, has its own language. It is very helpful to purchase a basic sewing book or look online to learn the most basic of sewing terms. None of the terms are difficult to learn, they are just simply different. And, by learning the sewing lingo you can much more easily follow directions for completing projects.

Start Small and Easy

Your first sewing projects should be simple and aimed at teaching you one specific skill. If you want to learn to make things for your home, for example, start with easy projects such as pillows. You can start with a simple square pillow and then move up to more complicated versions as you master sewing the straight lines of the square. If your goal is to start sewing clothing, you might want to start by making a skirt or something else which is forgiving of any mistakes you might have.

Don’t Spend a Lot of Money Until You Know What You Really Want from Sewing

It is always exciting to learn something new and go out and buy all of the stuff you need to make whatever you want. However, rather than going out and buying a top-of-the-line sewing machine and tons of other items, start with things you have around your home and a very basic sewing machine. This will ensure that when you purchase things they end up being what you really want.

Regardless of your sewing goals, be assured that you should have absolutely no problems learning to sew – it is not a hard skill to learn, but it takes a bit of patience and practice to learn.

This Sewing Blog Explained

Welcome to the sewing blog where we take a look at all types of sewing from making clothes, furnishings and doing alterations.  The purpose of the site is to share information and, in time, form a great sewing community. One thing is for certain though, sewing is not an activity where we just find elderly ladies chatting about days gone by, a lot of new designers and innovators are making their way into our homes via the internet – let’s take a look at a few of those ideas.

The Sewing Blog ‘Take’ On Making Clothes

This is not at all old or new in fact, designers have always been trying to invent new fashions and keen sewers have been trying to copy since the improvement of our media facilities. Way back in the 60′s before sewing blogs had been invented, young designers like Mary Quant took credit for introducing the mini skirt and pop-art fashions using black and white fabrics only. Today, young people are still looking to fashion designers, but they are not necessarily going with the crowd, they are designing just for themselves.

Furnishings

The biggest interest in sewing over the past decade has been quilting and other associated crafts. This has meant an increase in information available and a huge  surge of sewing blogs appearing all over the internet. Unfortunately, many are full of copied information and clearly not created by people who are either able to or even interested in sewing. However, that does not mean that there is not some excellent information to be had and help with all sorts of projects from creating an heirloom quilt to making a simple cushion or pillow.

Embellishments

Well, this could be almost anything but our sewing blog circle are really talking about embroidery and cut work which has come a long way since I sat with my gramdma learning how to do a variety of stiches like daisy chain and satin stitch. One of the reasons for this new interest is because of the availability of new technology and in particular the fabulous sewing machines that are able to do a lot of the embroidery for you.

The Sewing Blog’s Other Issues

Apart from these likely candidates, we are planning to look at things such as alterations like changing a zip or darning a patch of fabric (with or without a machine) and also how to use your sewing skills to make a profit and work from home. This is not a pipe dream at all, my sister had four children and through necessity learned to dressmake so she could clothe her growing family. This turned into a business for her, initially making shirts, pants and dresses and selling them using the party plan system and later wedding and bridesmaid dresses, ballgowns and yes, alterations!

What we will not do is to churn out old articles that have been created and re-created time after time so we can offer you good information and hopefully some useful tips in your sewing quests. If we can get a decent Sewing Blog community going, it is possible to have a forum so we can all help each other.
